Decor: How to transition from holidays to winter days
Posted on 30 January 2018
Ah, January. The last bites of sugar are consumed, the kids go back to school, and the Christmas decorations come down.
Unfortunately, packing away the decor is usually more crazy than (and definitely not as fun as) putting it up. So what if we told you that you didn't have to un-decorate?
Well, we found a way around it, and we've put together a few tips and tricks to supply you with a seamless post-holiday transition.
Tip #1: Make greenery your go to.
Christmas garlands are normally draped over your mantle, and the good news is that you can totally keep them there. Switch out your stockings and ornaments for photo frames or tasteful trinkets, and voila! You've got a wonderfully wintry centerpiece for your home.
Not your thing? Simply move the garland to your dining room table for a formal dinner.
Don't ditch your wreath yet, either. A wreath can be the perfect pop of green amidst colorless wintry day. For an extra touch, add pastel berries or have it flocked.
Tip #2: Get creative with the knick-knacks.
Who says cinnamon sticks are only for wassail and the holidays? Use them for fragrance, or tie them up in a place setting for extra texture and warmth.
That cozy throw you bought for your living room sofa? Ditch the matching Christmas pillows and snuggle up in your blanket all winter long.
Oh, and don't forget about pine cones. Though they become a staple filler during the holidays, pine cones carry well into the months that follow. Use them on your dining and coffee tables, as a vase or bowl filler, in your place settings, or for a mantle accent.
Tip #3: Keep it neutral.
It's true what they say: You can't go wrong with neutrals.
Sticking to a simple, neutral decor palette will change your little decorating life. Though it's tempting to amp up the radiant reds and greens of the season, opting for golds, silvers, whites, grays, and browns will make your transition into the new year a piece of cake (which we are sure you're craving right about now. Thanks, resolutions.)
It may take some advance planning for next year, but once you go black . . . er, neutral . . . you'll never go back.
